Neurodiversity is an umbrella term for neurodevelopmental differences. I am sure you have heard of this term a lot more in the recent years, especially in this booming social media era. An easier way of describing neurodiversity is a difference in your brain that makes you think differently, experience your senses differently and perceive the world differently.

A Guide to Neurodiverse Conditions Across All Demographics

Neurodiversity has many different facets and can be found in anyone regardless of race, age, or any demographic difference. In recent years many more people are being diagnosed with these differences, whether it is a late diagnosis or an early one, it is something you are born with.

There is Autism, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), ADD (attention deficit disorder), Tourette’s syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dyspraxia and Dysgraphia. I will give a brief summary of each neurodiverse conditions just so you have a general understanding.

Exploring Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and Tourette's

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts how people interact with others, regarding how they communicate and perceive their environment. Autism has different levels which implies that every person with autism has varied needs. Some autistic people are non-verbal, and some autistic people are verbal. And often autistic people have special interest as well as many other people with neurodiversity.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts people’s attention span and their ability to focus, as well as being hyperactive which is excessive movement. ADD is the same as ADHD without the hyperactivity. And in some cases, people can have both Autism and ADHD, something known as AuDHD which is a crossover of both neurodiverse conditions.

Tourette’s syndrome causes a person to make involuntary sounds and movements called tics and like the last two mentioned it can be early diagnosed or late diagnosed.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that primarily affects one’s ability to accurately read and spell and can cause difficulty for someone’s literacy skills. Dyscalculia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes persistent difficulty in understanding numbers and hence causing them to have a difficulty with mathematics. Dyspraxia affects movement and co-ordination. Dysgraphia is a neurodevelopmental disorder and learning difference in which impacts how someone writes.

It is crucial to know whether you have any neurodiverse traits, as it can help you or your child get reasonable adjustments where necessary and also to have an understanding of who you are as a person. Regardless of your differences you are still an amazing person!
